Mental Health Awareness Month: Resources for Our Senior Living Residents

Maintaining good mental health is essential at every stage of life, but it becomes especially important as we age. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shining a light on mental wellness and the many ways we can support our emotional health. At the JCHC, we understand that seniors often face unique challenges—limited mobility, reduced access to transportation, and difficulty navigating technology—that can make self-care more difficult. That’s why our programs are designed to meet residents where they are, providing easy access to enriching activities that boost all aspects of well-being.

One thing that remains constant in life is change. As we age, our emotional needs evolve, and the importance of connection, purpose, and support becomes more apparent. Feelings of isolation and loneliness can significantly impact mental health, which is why community life and engaging activities are so critical for seniors.

The Joy and Comfort of Pet Therapy

Few things brighten a day quite like the wag of a friendly tail. At Lester Senior Living, we’re proud to offer pet therapy sessions that bring joy, companionship, and comfort to our residents. Our beloved therapy dog, Harmony, visits regularly and is always greeted with smiles, hugs, and laughter.

Pet therapy, or animal-assisted therapy, is proven to help eliminate feelings of loneliness, sharpen cognitive skills, and even encourage seniors to stay active. The calming presence of a therapy dog like Harmony can lift spirits, lower blood pressure, and provide meaningful companionship—reminding us all that unconditional love often comes on four legs.

Creative Expression Through Arts and Crafts

Crafting is much more than a fun pastime; it’s a therapeutic activity that offers seniors a chance to express themselves creatively, engage socially, and build a sense of accomplishment. At JCHC, we believe creativity is essential for mental wellness, which is why our activity calendar is packed with engaging classes.

From water color painting classes to baking club with Keisha, our residents enjoy a variety of hands-on activities that spark creativity and build connections with their peers. These classes are designed to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of skill level, and are a valuable part of maintaining cognitive function and emotional health.

The Power of Mindfulness and Movement

Meditation and mindfulness practices are also integrated into life at Lester Senior Living. Our weekly Balance and Mindfulness classes give residents the opportunity to pause, breathe, and reconnect with themselves. These sessions incorporate breathing techniques and mental focus exercises that help residents manage stress, improve concentration, and gain a greater sense of calm.

One of the biggest benefits of mindfulness is learning how to choose which thoughts and feelings deserve our attention, allowing us to preserve energy for the experiences that truly bring us joy. This emotional resilience is vital to maintaining a healthy mental state.

Additionally, physical wellness activities like chair yoga, Zumba, and stretching classes are offered throughout the week. Our on-site fitness center also allows residents to exercise on their own schedules. These physical activities not only improve strength and flexibility but also release endorphins that naturally elevate our moods.

Supporting Mental Wellness, Every Day at JCHC

At JCHC, we know that caring for mental health is just as important as caring for physical health. That’s why our programs, activities, and community events are thoughtfully designed to create meaningful moments, encourage social connections, and support emotional well-being.

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder that prioritizing self-care isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. For our senior residents, having access to therapy animals, creative arts, mindfulness classes, and fitness programs makes a real difference in their quality of life.
