Celebrating Moms
& Our Annual Gala this May.

May is an especially exciting month for us here at the Jewish Community Housing Corporation, and for its residents. Not only do we get to honor the many moms, grandmas, and great grandmas that live with us, but we celebrate our supporters and friends at our annual fundraising Gala. On May 15th, we will gather to rededicate ourselves to our mission: Taking Care of Those Who Took Care of Us. There will be great food, entertainment, good laughs, and great company. But underneath it all, lies our dedication to all the Moms (and Dads) who live with us each day with joy, dignity, and resilience.

It is our privilege to honor and celebrate you on this Mother’s Day, and every day.

Building On Our Success
at the JCHC

Thanks to the generous support from donors like you, the Jewish Community Housing Corporation of Metropolitan New Jersey (JCHC) has been meeting the dynamic needs of seniors in our community for over 40 years.

Happy Mother's Day From JCHC!

Israeli Students Visit JCHC

Last week, high school students from Rishon LeZion in Israel, stopped by to visit our seniors at the Lester Campus. Residents and these 10th and 11th graders got deep into conversations quickly. With so much happening in Israel, the residents were full of curiosity and questions about how things were going and what it was like. The kids, it seems, were equally curious about the life of Jews in America and in particular, a senior community with a strong Jewish tradition. The visit was over too quickly, but the laughs, hugs and well wishes were heartfelt. Lester Senior Living thanks Max Kaslar and the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest for creating such an unforgettable experience.

Gala 2023 Throwback!

If you’re unfamiliar with our Annual Gala, let us share some of the magic. At JCHC, we host the Annual Gala to thank and celebrate all of our donors and supporters who have allowed us to continue improving the lives of our senior residents. It is also our opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the JCHC mission, to take care of those who took care of us.

Our 2023 Annual Gala was a huge success, thanks to all of YOU! We hope this year’s event, with your continued support will be even better!

Donate to Make A Difference!

The JCHC and its incredibly special caregivers, will never stop working for our residents and their families. We won’t stop advocating for them, or showing up with our support, and we continue to count on our community to make it all possible.

Lester Senior Livings' "Mother - Daughter" Duo!

Meet the lovely and musically-talented mother and daughter duo, Sue and Lorraine! They have been living in a two-bedroom apartment at Lester Senior Living in Morris County for over three years now and really enjoy their time here. Stephen, Lorraine’s brother and Sue’s son, actually was the one to introduce them to what their lives could be like at the JCHC. We were happy to interview both Sue and Lorraine in honor of Mother’s Day, as they both think the world of one another and cherish their relationship as mother and daughter.

Attention Seniors: It All Hangs in the Balance!

The adage “use it or lose it” holds particularly true when it comes to balance. Not only does balance contribute to an active and independent senior lifestyle, but it also serves as a strong defense against the risk of potentially disastrous falls. For seniors, a decline in balance can lead to a host of issues, from a loss of mobility and independence to an increased susceptibility to injuries. Fortunately, incorporating simple balance exercises into a daily routine can make a world of difference. Let’s take a closer look:

Mothers Day Activities for Mom in Memory Care

If this is Mom’s first mother’s day in memory care you both might still be adjusting to the new normal. Our experts at JCHC are here to assure you that although this is not what you are used to, you are still able to make memories together and enjoy the day with mom. We first urge you to understand that mom might not remember it’s mother’s day, if that is the case, as hard as it is just let it be. The focus isn’t on the day itself as it is just spending time together.

Heller Dining Room

Lester Senior Living Updates

We are pleased to report that the first phase of the Lester renovation project, with the focus being on the first and second floors of the Heller Independent Living Apartments and the Weston Assisted Living Residence, has successfully been completed.  Some of the highlights of the completed work include:

  • An upgraded and expanded Medical Suite, enhancing the waiting room and adding more examination rooms, meeting the growing needs among residents for such services and providing better patient privacy and confidentiality for meetings between residents, family members and medical professionals;  Special thanks to the Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey for their major financial support with this initiative.

  • A reconfigured  Heller community dining room, moving away from the more institutional dining setting to one that is now facilitating resident choice; when and with whom they can eat, as well as proper storage for walkers and wheelchairs while residents are dining;

  • New seating, tables and other furniture that address the mobility limitations faced by a growing number of our senior residents;
  •  Additional fitness opportunities such as a second area in Heller area with work-out equipment and a clear path  on the second floor around the atrium for walking;

  • A new, state-of-the-art cinema experience and improvements to audio and visual systems in other locations throughout the building, making the shared experience accessible to all, including those with hearing and sight issues; and,

  • Other aesthetic, lighting and improvements in community rooms and common areas enhancing socialization, while making the building more visually appealing.

We are now moving on to the second phase of the Lester renovation project, which will focus on improvements to the grounds around the building; reinventing our backyard to incorporate outdoor events with dining, raised gardening beds and a new layout and furniture for more and better outdoor activities and social gatherings.

Even after the back courtyard upgrades have been completed (hopefully by the end of this coming summer), there will still be much more work to be done at Lester Senior Housing.  There is additional outdoor work that we have planned for the front of the building.  After that, we plan to upgrade both the independent living apartments and the assisted living units, introducing new safety and other accessibility features in our apartments, such as walk-in showers, new kitchen appliances and additional lower shelving.

A look inside Lester's Renovations

We are asking the Greater MetroWest Jewish Community to consider adding your support to these important initiatives. With our work together, resident families have greater peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are safe, happy, and living with high quality of life.
